Michigan is a state known for its stunning nature, Great Lakes, and friendly neighbors. Now, there’s a rapidly expanding circular economy, supported by legislation and changemakers from the private and public sector.
Last year, Michigan’s recycling rate hit an all time high at 25%, with their circular economy employing more than 72,000 people. These numbers are expected to grow with the implementation of the updated solid waste law that the Michigan Recycling Coalition spearheaded back in 2022. This piece of legislation sets benchmark recycling standards for communities of all sizes, and coupled with county-based materials management planning, requires the development of concrete pathways to grow sustainable materials management opportunities across the state.
Through events, programs, and education, the Michigan Recycling Coalition (MRC) aims to connect communities to the partners and resources needed to effectively bolster local materials management strategies. To help create unique and sustainable resource recovery programs, the MRC also invests in circular economy partnerships with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, and specially in their accelerator program, NextCycle Michigan.
There’s lots on the horizon for the MRC and for Michigan at large. Michigan legislators are beginning to recognize extended producer responsibility as a viable solution for issues such as batteries and packaging waste. The MRC is proud to lead discussions and advocate for EPR policies while simultaneously honing in on the specific materials management issues communities face each day. The MRC is currently implementing its US EPA Recycling Education and Outreach grant to help community leaders provide meaningful education to both residential and commercial audiences. We continue to run programs and host events that uplift and unite Michigan’s circular economy leaders.
